French physiologist. Born on the British island of Mauritius to an American father, Charles Edward Brown, and a French mother, Charlotte Séquard. He went to Paris in 1838 to study medicine, receiving his doctorate in 1840. After that, in addition to his clinical practice, he conducted a variety of successful electrophysiological experiments to treat diseases of the nervous system, and also described the Brown-Séquard syndrome. In 1878, he became professor at the Collège de France, succeeding C. Bernard.

フランスの生理学者。イギリス領モーリシャス島で，アメリカ人ブラウンCharles Edward Brownを父とし，フランス人セカールCharlotte Séquardを母として生まれた。1838年パリへ出て医学を修め，40年学位を得た。それ以後，実地診療のかたわら神経系の病気を治療する必要から各種の電気生理学に関する実験を試み成果を収め，またブラウン･セカール症候群を記載した。そして78年C.ベルナールの後任としてコレージュ･ド･フランスの教授となる。
