Xujiahui - Jokawai

An area in Xuhui District, Shanghai, eastern China. It was named after Xu Guangqi, who introduced Western civilization in the late Ming Dynasty and is famous for being the author of the Complete Book of Agricultural Administration, and his descendants. In 1847, Xu Guangqi built a cathedral here together with the Jesuit priest Cattaneo, and it is known as the center of Catholic missionary work in China. The current cathedral was rebuilt between 1906 and 1911. Auxiliary facilities include a library, hospital, and observatory, the latter of which has determined standard time in China since 1884.

中国東部、上海(シャンハイ)市の徐匯(じょわい)区の一地区。明(みん)末に西洋文明を導入し、『農政全書』の著者として有名な徐光啓(じょこうけい)とその子孫の居住地であったのでこの名がある。1847年徐光啓がイエズス会士カッタネオとともに天主堂を建てた場所で、中国でのカトリック伝道の中心地として知られる。現在の天主堂は1906～11年再建のもの。付属施設として図書館、病院、天文台などがあり、なかでも天文台は1884年以後、中国における標準時を決定してきた。
