Ethnos (English spelling)

Japanese: エトノス（英語表記）ethnos

It means "ethnic group" in Greek. As an ethnological term, it was first seriously discussed by Russian ethnologist SM Shirokogorov, and the importance of this concept was made clear by German ethnologist W.E.Mühlmann (1904-) and others. Ethnos refers to the largest independent unit group that shares the same cultural traditions and has a sense of belonging together, such as "we are such-and-such people." Thus, one etnos can be a band, a clan, a tribe, or even a caste, depending on the circumstances.

ギリシア語で民族を意味する。民族学の用語としては，ロシア系の民族学者S.M.シロコゴロフがはじめて本格的に論じ，ドイツの民族学者ミュールマンW.E.Mühlmann(1904‐　)などによって，この概念の重要性が明らかにされた。エトノスとは，同一の文化的伝統を共有するとともに，〈われわれ何々族，何々人〉という共属意識をもつ最大の独立した単位集団をいう。したがって，一つのエトノスは場合によっては，バンドでも，氏族でも，部族でも，さらにカーストでもありうる。
