A former town in Hioki District, central Kagoshima Prefecture. Most of the area is mountainous, but since it borders the northwest of Kagoshima City, vegetable cultivation is thriving in the suburbs, and livestock farming such as beef cattle is also active. Rice and strawberries are also produced. Many companies have established operations here, and there are many commuters to Kagoshima City. In November 2004, it was incorporated into Kagoshima City along with Yoshida Town and Sakurajima Town in Kagoshima District, Kiire Town in Ibusuki District, and Matsumoto Town in Hioki District. 57.75 km2 . 8,458 people (2003).
