The head temple of the Kenpon Hokke sect in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City. It is called Myoto-san. The principal image is Shaka Taho Buddha. In 1383 (Eitoku 3), Nichiju established the Hokke-do Hall in his residence with the patronage of the wealthy merchant Tennojiya Tsumyo. With the favor of the regent Fujiwara Yoshimoto and others, Nichiju received an imperial decree from the Rakuchu-guho (the governor of Kyoto), and in 1389 (Genchu 6, Ko'o 1) the temple changed its name to its current one, and the influence of the temple grew. In 1532 (Tenbun 1), it became a place of imperial prayer for Emperor Gonara, but it was burned down during the Tenbun-Hokke Rebellion (1536), and in 1583 (Tensho 11), Toyotomi Hideyoshi relocated it to Teramachi Nijo and rebuilt it. In 1595 (Bunroku 4), the Fujufuse sect, which refused to attend the eye-opening ceremony for the Great Buddha of Hoko-ji Temple, was oppressed, and the 27th abbot of the temple, Nikkyo, who was a private disciple of the sect's founder, Nichio, was sentenced to have his ears and nose shaved off. In the 18th century, the 92nd abbot, Nichiju, perfected the teachings of the sect. In 1968 (Showa 43), it was moved to its current location. It has a Kamakura period Lotus Sutra Essentials Waka Kaishi (a national important cultural property) in its collection. Dojo-ji Temple in Kishu (Wakayama Prefecture) has a temple bell with the inscription dated 1359 (Shohei 14).
