...In a broad sense, it refers to all mammals of the genus Cervus and the subgenus Cervus, but in a narrow sense, it refers to only one species, Cervus nippon (illustration). The subgenus Sika is a medium-sized, graceful deer native to East Asia, with a white part (tail mirror) that can be spread on the buttocks, a pale-colored metatarsal gland on the outside of the midfoot of the hind foot, and grown antlers that are usually three-pronged. Taiwan has the Taiwanese deer C. taiouanus , which has a short first branch of the antler; China, the Korean peninsula, Ussuri, and Hokkaido have the long-eared and four-legged deer C. hortulorum ; Tsushima deer C. pulchellus , whose first branch of the antler splits higher than the base, lives in Tsushima; and the Japanese deer lives in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. ...
