Silver sparrow - Silver sparrow imitation

A moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Orthoptera. Its wing span is around 65 mm. It is a large moth with narrow forewings that at first glance resemble a hawk moth, hence the name hawk moth. There are two large silver spots on the surface of the forewings. Males have a prominent tuft of crimson hairs at the base of the abdomen. It is distributed in Japan and China. There are also similar species in tropical regions. It is monovoltine, with adults appearing in the summer. The larvae grow by feeding on maple leaves around September, and overwinter as pupae.

昆虫綱鱗翅(りんし)目シャチホコガ科に属するガ。はねの開張65ミリメートル内外。大形のガで、前翅は幅が狭く、一見スズメガに似ているためにスズメモドキの名がある。前翅の表面には大きい2個の銀色斑(はん)がある。雄は腹部の基部に朱赤色の顕著な毛束を備える。日本および中国に分布。熱帯地域にはさらに類似の種を産する。年一化性で、成虫は夏に出現する。幼虫は9月ごろにカエデ類の葉を食べて育ち、蛹(さなぎ)で越冬する。
