The city occupies the northern part of the Takanawa Peninsula facing the Hiuchi Nada Sea in northern Ehime Prefecture, and includes part of the Geiyo Islands. It was incorporated as a city in 1920. The city center developed as a castle town after Todo Takatora built Imabari Castle (Fukiage Castle) in 1600, and the Yosan Line runs through it. Cotton textile production has developed since the middle of the feudal period, and in addition to towels, which are the largest in the country, cotton cloth, clothing, and dyeing industries are also thriving, with factories concentrated along the Izumi River, which provides good quality water for factories. Shipbuilding is active in Hashihama, a former salt field. Sakurai lacquerware is a traditional specialty. The city is prolific in fruit, including mandarin oranges. Imabari Port is a port of call for inland sea routes and a departure and arrival point for ships to the Geiyo Islands. The Shimanami Kaido (Onomichi-Imabari Route of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge) opened in May 1999. In January 2005, the towns of Tamagawa, Namikata, Onishi, Kikuma, Yoshiumi, Miyakubo, Hakata, Kamiura, Omishima, Sekimae, and Asakura were incorporated into the municipality. The area is 419.13 km2 . The population is 166,532 (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
