Ten thousand pieces of paper - Yorozu no Fumihogu

Ihara Saikaku's Ukiyo-zoshi. In January 1696 (Genroku 9), Saikaku's fourth posthumous collection of manuscripts was compiled into five volumes by his disciple Hojo Dansui, and published by Kamimura Heizaemon in Kyoto, Kariganeya Shobei in Osaka, and Yorozuya Seibei in Edo. It is a collection of 20 epistolary novels, with the idea that a craftsman making female dolls made of harinuki paper found them amongst scraps of paper for materials in Takatsu, Osaka. The letters are all about "funny rumors, sad tales, sometimes happy beginnings, glorious ends" (preface), and include excellent works that depict the true feelings of people in dire situations, such as Volume 1, Part 3 and Volume 2, Part 3. This work represents a new attempt by Saikaku to use the epistolary form to express the depths of the human heart.
