Bujoji Temple

Japanese:
Bujoji Temple

An independent temple located in Hanaseharachi-cho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto City. The mountain name is Daihizan. The principal image is Senju Kannon. The temple was founded by the Tendai ascetic Kanku Sainen in 1154 (Kuju 1), when he built a three-bay hall and enshrined the Senju Kannon. At that time, Emperor Toba donated statues of Acala and Bishamonten. In 1159 (Heiji 1), Fujiwara Tadamichi carved out 35 cho from the Hojoji temple territory and made it the temple's land, and in the same year Taira Kiyomori also donated a relic from the Buddha, making it a training center and holy place for ascetic practices in northern Kyoto. However, towards the end of the Kamakura period, Enryaku-ji Temple and Mii-dera Temple (Onjo-ji Temple) fought over control of Bujo-ji Temple, causing the temple to fall into disrepair. It then came under the control of the head temple of the Shugen sect, Shogoin Monzeki, and was restored by Genkai during the Kyoho era (1716-1736). The main hall, Akai-ya, and Nio-mon Gate, which retain the style of the Kamakura period, are designated as Important Cultural Properties. In addition, the statues of the Thousand-Armed Kannon, Acala, and Bishamonten, which have been the principal images since the temple's founding, are also designated as Important Cultural Properties.
