...Early on, there was Pyrrho (whose name became another name for skepticism) and his disciple Timon, who taught that since it is impossible to make a definite judgment about anything, in order to obtain peace of mind (ataraxia), one should practice the reservation of judgment (epoche). In the middle period, they were represented by Arkesilaos and Carneades, who were the heads of the Academy, a school associated with Plato. They attacked Stoicism as dogmatism, and the latter in particular taught that one should be satisfied with probabilistic knowledge (the terms Academy and Neo-Academician are sometimes used as synonyms for skeptics). ...
