Social scientist and translator. Born in Tsuchizakiminato, Akita City. His real name was Omiyako Maki. After dropping out of Gyosei Junior High School in Tokyo, he traveled to France accompanied by his father, a member of parliament. In 1918 (Taisho 7), he graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Paris. During that time, he participated in the Clarté movement, which called for an internationalization of ideas. After working at the Japanese Embassy, he returned to Japan and in 1921 founded the Tsuchizaki edition of The Sower with Kaneshige Yobun and others, introducing the Third International for the first time. After republishing The Sower in Tokyo, he promoted the proletarian cultural movement in publications such as The Literary Front. During World War II, he was involved in the national liberation movement in French Indochina. After the war, he served as president of the Central Labor Academy and a professor at Hosei University. In addition to translating and introducing works such as Barbusse's Clarté, he has also written memoirs such as A Modern History (1965) and The Sower (1978).
