The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

A masterpiece by the British poet S.T. Coleridge. It appeared at the beginning of the first edition (1798) of Lyric Songs, co-written with Wordsworth, and was placed at the end of the two-volume reprint. It is a narrative poem in ballad form, in which the ancient Mariner is punished by being cast away to the Antarctic with his companions for the crime of shooting an albatross, and then returns home after a mystical experience. It is a masterpiece of supernatural poetry, using symbolic images such as supernatural-looking natural phenomena, "death while still alive" on a ghost ship, and a response to the beauty of a sea serpent under the moonlight, to beautifully depict the abyssal sensation of a mind estranged from nature, and conversely, the bliss of a mind at one with nature.

イギリスの詩人S.T.コールリジの代表作。ワーズワースとの共著《抒情歌謡集》初版(1798)の巻頭を飾り，2巻本再版の巻末に置かれた。老水夫がアホウドリを射殺した罪の結果，罰として仲間とともに南極近くにまで流され，神秘的体験を経て故郷に帰還するという筋の，バラッド形式の物語詩。超自然的様相を呈する自然現象，幽霊船上の〈生きながらの死〉，月下の海蛇の美への感応などの象徴的イメージを用いて，自然から離反した精神の奈落の感覚や，逆に自然と一体化した精神の至福をみごとに描き出した超自然詩の傑作である。
