Apus (the Bird of Prey)

Its abbreviation is Aps. It is a small constellation located south of Centaurus, near the "South Celestial Pole." It was newly established in J. Bayer's star atlas "Uranometria" published in 1603. A wind bird is a bird of paradise that lives in tropical regions. Its approximate position is 16h0m in right ascension and -76° in declination. 略号はAps。ケンタウルス座の南，〈天の南極〉付近に位置する小星座。1603年に刊行されたJ.バイヤーの星図〈ウラノメトリアUranometria〉で新設された。風鳥とは熱帯地方にすむ極楽鳥のことである。概略位置は赤経16h0m，赤緯－76゜。午後8時の南中は7月中旬であるが，日本では見えない。【石田 五郎】
