A law that established segregation laws for blacks in both the North and South of the United States from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. The origin of the name is unclear, but it is said to come from a repeated phrase in a minstrel show song written by T.D. Rice. Unlike the semi-customary separation during the slavery era, the Black Codes institutionalized strict and systematic separation of blacks and whites in all public facilities, including schools, railroads, restaurants, theaters, and hotels. Unlike the Black Codes that were established in southern states immediately after the Civil War, they are not a direct legacy of slavery.
