Born March 10, 1787 in York, Yorkshire
[Died] November 13, 1849. York, Yorkshire. British portrait painter. After training as a lithographer's apprentice for seven years from the age of 11, he entered the Royal Academy in 1807 and studied under T. Lawrence. He became famous as one of the few nude painters in England due to his sincere research into the nude. Many of his excellent works remain in his hometown of Yorkshire. His major work is "The Battle" (1825).

イギリスの肖像画家。 11歳より7年間石版工の徒弟として修業したあと，1807年ロイヤル・アカデミーに入り，T.ロレンスに師事。真摯な裸体の研究によりイギリスでは数少い裸体画家として名をなした。故郷ヨークシャーにすぐれた多くの作品が残る。主要作品『戦闘』 (1825) 。
