1906‐79 German-born Islamic art historian. Studied at the universities of Munich, Cambridge, and Frankfurt. After working at the American Institute of Persian Art and Archaeology, the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University, and the University of Michigan, he became director of the Freer Gallery of Art and the Near East, and a professor at the Institute of Art at New York University.
