It is a region that is centered on the eastern part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir in northwest India, and extends over the southeastern part of Azad Kashmir on the Pakistani side west of the Indo-Pakistani ceasefire line, and the northeastern edge of the Aksai Chin Plateau, which has been under Chinese administration since the 1962 Sino-Indian border conflict (not recognized by India). It has an area of 118,500 km2. It is a mountainous region with four mountain ranges running from northwest to southeast: Karakoram, Ladakh, Zaskar, and Greater Himalayas.
