A large platform in the public square of ancient Rome. It is the plural of the Latin rostrum (beak), and refers to the bill attached to the bow of a ship used to attack enemy ships. It originates from the fact that the rostra of an enemy ship captured in the Battle of Antium in 338 BC was displayed on a platform in the public square.
