A passerine bird of the Weaverbird family. It is about 15 cm long, the same size as a sparrow. The male's reproductive plumage is yellow on the top, black on the face, back of the head, and throat, and dark brown on the back with black vertical stripes. The underside is pale. The male's non-reproductive plumage is pale brown with black stripes, similar to the female's. It is distributed from India to southwestern China and the Indochina Peninsula, as well as on the islands of Java and Bali. It is commonly found in lowland wetlands, riverside reed beds, grasslands, and farmland. It mainly eats seeds, causing damage to rice. It breeds in groups, and various breeding habits are known, including monogamy, polygamy, and promiscuity.
