Italian warrior. Born to a small lord in Treviso (Veneto region) in northern Italy, he actively participated in military activities in cooperation with Emperor Frederick II, and became ruler of important cities such as Vicenza, Padua, and Verona. He was a man of great bravery and was feared as a representative Ghibelline warrior. Even after Frederick's death, he continued to fight against the church despite being excommunicated. He left behind many legends, and Dante also included him in his Divine Comedy. [Shimizu Koichiro]

イタリアの武人。北イタリアのトレビゾ(ベネト地方)の小領主の子として生まれ，皇帝フリードリヒ2世と組んで活発な軍事活動を行い，ビチェンツァ，パドバ，ベローナなどの重要な都市の君主となった。武勇にすぐれ，ギベリンの代表的武人として恐れられ，フリードリヒの死後も破門されたまま教会と戦い続けた。多くの伝説を残し，ダンテも《神曲》でとりあげている。【清水広一郎】
