?‐586 King of the Visigothic Kingdom, established in the Iberian Peninsula in the early 6th century. Reigned 568-586. Latin name Leovigild. He promoted political unification of the peninsula by vigorously attacking the Byzantine forces that controlled the eastern and southern parts of the peninsula, the Suebi, a Germanic state in the northwest, and the Basques west of the Pyrenees, which were rival powers to the newly established kingdom. He conquered and merged with the Suebi in 585. However, he maintained the Arian heresy (Arian) and persecuted the majority Catholics, which led to a bitter defeat for him when his eldest son Hermenegildo, who had converted to Catholicism under the influence of his wife, rebelled.
