1867‐1940 Founder of the modern Vietnamese national movement. Also known as Suo-nan and Shi-han. Born into a family of readers in Nghe An Province in northern Vietnam. After the failure of the Van Thanh (literati) uprising in 1885, he became familiar with Chinese reform ideas and Chinese translations of Western ideas, and planned an anti-French movement with foreign aid, supporting a royal leader. In 1904, he formed the Restoration Party with Cuong De as its leader, and the following year traveled to Japan to write "The History of Vietnam's Fall," in which he appealed to Liang Qichao and independents such as Okuma Shigenobu, who were staying in Japan, about Vietnam's plight. He also started the Dong Du Movement (a movement to study in Japan), invited Cuong De and others to Japan, and organized the New Vietnam Constitutional Association.
