German composer. Along with Schubert, he is known as the perfector of the ballad (ballade) as a song. He studied music in Halle, near his birthplace, and completed theology and other studies at the university there. In 1820 he became cantor of the Jacobin Church in Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland), and the following year he became the city's music director and gymnasium teacher, remaining based in the city until 1866. During this time he traveled around Europe as a vocalist, and lived in Kiel in his later years. He left behind 368 songs, mainly ballads rich in dramatic expression, and particularly famous are "Erlkönig" (1818, poem by Goethe), "Mr. Orff" (1821), and "Heinrich the Birdcatcher" (1836), which were written around the same time as Schubert's work of the same name. He also composed unaccompanied choral pieces, operas, symphonies, and chamber music. → Lied Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
