Septaria (English spelling)

A type of pseudofossil. When limestone fine-grained rocks (mudstone and shale) undergo diagenesis, limestone nodules can form. When polygonal cracks resembling a turtle shell appear on the surface of an ellipsoidal nodule, along which calcium carbonate precipitates, producing thin veins of calcite, this is called septaria. In addition to calcium carbonate, gypsum, pyrite, barite, etc. may also rarely precipitate in the cracks. In Japan, it is often found in the Mesozoic Cretaceous System of the Yubari region of Hokkaido, and in the strata of the Cenozoic Tertiary Miocene Series in Niigata Prefecture.

偽化石(ぎかせき)の一種。石灰岩質の細粒岩（泥岩や頁(けつ)岩）が続成作用を受けたために、石灰岩質の団塊を生ずることがある。楕円(だえん)体形の団塊の表面に亀(かめ)の甲状の多角形の割れ目ができて、割れ目に沿って炭酸石灰が沈殿して方解石の細脈が生じたものを亀甲石（セプタリア）という。割れ目には炭酸石灰のほか、まれに石膏(せっこう)、黄鉄鉱、重晶石などが沈殿することもある。日本では北海道夕張地方の中生代白亜系や、新潟県の新生代第三紀中新統の地層に多くみられる。
