It is an epiphytic orchid native to the Himalayas, India and Southeast Asia, and there are about 50 species. Its genus name is Phalaenopsis, and the species cultivated as potted plants or cut flowers in horticulture have broad semicircular lateral petals and whisker-like projections on the lip. These are hybrids improved from white-colored original species such as Phalaenopsis amabilis and Phalaenopsis aphrodite, or pink-colored original species such as Phalaenopsis silleriana. It has wide, fleshy leaves that grow alternately on short stems, and several to several dozen flowers grow in rows on long, slender flower stalks that extend in an arch shape from the leaf axils.
