...Of the 48 vows, the 18th vow states that one can attain rebirth in paradise by remembering Amida Buddha, and this became the basis for the practice of chanting the name of Amida in later China and Japan. This Buddha appears in Sanskrit documents as Amitābha (Infinite Light) and Amitāyus (Infinite Life), and Amida is probably a dialect of the first half of this, amitā (infiniteness) (there are other theories as well). Amida Buddha appears to have appeared in the early Kushan period (1st to 2nd century) as a Mahayana Buddhist Buddha, and it is said that his origin was influenced by Iranian thought. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Amitāyus" are listed below.
