A type of land lease procedure. The word comes from preces (petition). It originated in ancient Rome and was practiced in Western Europe during the Frankish period, where it played a role in the accumulation of large estates such as those of the church. Originally, land was leased for an irregular period in exchange for rent, but as the terms became longer, such as five years, life, or hereditary, the practice of peasants donating their land to influential people and then re-leasing it became common.

借地手続の一つ。語源は preces (請願) 。古代ローマで発生，フランク王国時代，西ヨーロッパで行われ，教会などの大所領の集積に役割を果した。本来，地代支払いと引替えに不定期で土地を借用するものであったが，5年，終身，世襲と長期化するとともに，農民が自分の所有地を有力者に寄進したうえであらためて借受ける慣行が一般化した。
