A city in the eastern part of Santa Catarina State in southern Brazil. It is a river port city on the Itajaí River, about 100 km northwest of the state capital Florianopolis. It was founded in 1852 by German immigrants. With a cotton-growing region behind it, the textile industry has developed, and sugar cane, grains, tobacco, vegetables, fruit, and livestock products are also collected, distributed, and processed here. It is connected by road to the state capital, and by rail and road to the port of Itajaí at the mouth of the Itajaí River. Population: 211,677 (1991 estimate).
