Ventimiglia (English spelling)
A town in the province of Imperia in the Liguria region in northwest Italy. A resort town on the Riviera coast. It is about 29 km east-northeast of Nice in France, and its train station is a border station. To the east of the town lies an ancient city called Albium Intemerium in Roman times, which still retains a theater, tombs, remains of a city wall, and paved roads. The caves near the nearby village of Grimaldi are famous as Paleolithic ruins. The town is famous for its flower market, and the cathedral, which was built in the 12th century and later restored, remains today. Population: 25,221 (estimated 1991).
