Circadian rhythm

This refers to the changes observed in the various phenomena exhibited by living organisms that are repeated on a roughly 24-hour cycle, and is also known as the circadian rhythm (circa means approximately, and dies means days). This rhythm is different from the diurnal rhythm of the outside world, and is thought to be an innate, internal, biological clock based on the rhythm of cellular metabolism. This rhythm is unique to a species or individual, and likely arose as an adaptation of the organism to periodic changes in the outside world. In plants, the up and down movement of the leaves of the scarlet runner bean is well known.

生物が示す諸現象のなかにみられる、おおよそ24時間周期で繰り返される変化をいい、サーカディアンリズムcircadian rhythm（circaはおおよそ、diesは日の意味）ともいう。このリズムは外界の日周性リズムとは異なり、生得的、内的な体内時計のようなもので、細胞の代謝のリズムに基づくものと考えられる。このリズムは一つの種または個体に特有であり、生物が外界の周期的変化に適応して生じたものであろう。植物ではベニバナインゲンの葉の上下運動がよく知られている。
