…When one of the disks is rotated, air is released from the holes only when the small holes in the other disks are aligned, and this intermittent air flow produces a fundamental tone whose frequency is the product of the number of holes and the number of rotations of the disks. The critical state itself is said to have been discovered in 1822 by Charles Cagniard de la Tour (1777-1859) of France, but its meaning was not made clear until the method of artificial pressurized liquefaction was established.
