...At that time, the title khalīfa rasūl Allāh, meaning "victim of God's Messenger (i.e. Muhammad)," was the first title used to refer to a caliph. The second caliph, Umar I, was the first to refer to himself as "victim of God's Messenger," because he was the representative of Abu Bakr. However, as this title became too long and inconvenient, he started to use Amīr al‐Mu'minīn, meaning "chief of the believers."
