Japanese: WCC - だぶりゅーしーしー(英語表記)World Council of Churches
WCC - World Council of Churches

The abbreviation for World Council of Churches. It has its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and is engaged in the ecumenical movement for the unity of Christian churches around the world. The founding of the WCC was in preparation before World War II, but was postponed due to the war, and the inaugural general assembly was held in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1948. Since then, the second assembly was held in Evanston, Illinois, USA in 1954, the third in New Delhi, India in 1961, the fourth in Uppsala, Sweden in 1968, the fifth in Nairobi, Kenya in 1975, and the sixth in Vancouver, Canada in 1983.

At the inaugural general assembly in 1948, 147 churches from 48 countries participated, but by 1978, 293 churches from 90 countries participated, with the total membership reaching approximately 400 million. Initially, the majority of members were churches from Western European countries, but since the third assembly in 1961, churches from communist countries such as the Russian Orthodox Church, as well as churches from Asia, Africa, and South America have participated. Many people from developing countries have been active in key departments, including M. M. Thomas from India as central chairman from 1968, Philip Porter from Jamaica as the third general secretary from 1972, and Emilio Castelo from Uruguay in 1984. Since the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), which played a groundbreaking role in the ecumenical movement, the WCC and the Roman Catholic Church have had a close relationship and have been cooperating in research and practice.

世界教会協議会World Council of Churchesの略称。
