…A colloidal dispersion system in which solid particles are suspended in a liquid dispersion medium, such as gold colloids or polystyrene latex dispersions, is called a sol if it is highly fluid, and a gel if it is poorly fluid and can maintain its shape against gravity. A system in which water is the dispersion medium is called a hydrosol, and one in which an organic solvent such as benzene or vegetable oil is the dispersion medium is called an organosol. Among hydrosols, those that are relatively unstable and easily coagulate with the addition of a small amount of electrolyte, such as gold or iron oxide sols, are called hydrophobic sols, while those that are very stable and can only be salted out by the addition of a large amount of electrolyte, such as gelatin aqueous solution, are called hydrophilic sols. …

…金コロイド，ポリスチレン･ラテックスの分散系のように，固体の分散粒子が液体の分散媒に浮遊するコロイド分散系で，流動性に富む場合をゾルといい，流動性に乏しく重力に抗して形状を維持できる場合をゲルという。水を分散媒とするものをヒドロゾルhydrosol，ベンゼンや植物油など有機溶媒を分散媒とするものをオルガノゾルorganosolという。ヒドロゾルのうち，金や酸化鉄のゾルのように，比較的不安定で微量の電解質の添加により容易に凝結するものを疎水性ゾルhydrophobic solといい，ゼラチン水溶液のように，非常に安定で大量の電解質の添加によって初めて塩析されるものを親水性ゾルhydrophilic solという。…
