The capital of Colombia and the department of Cundinamarca. Population: 5,237,635 (1995). Located in the Cundinamarca Basin in the Andes at an altitude of 2,600 m. Founded in 1538 by Jimenez de Quesada on the land of the indigenous Chibcha people, the city was called Santa Fe or Santa Fe de Bogotá. After independence it was called Bogotá, but in 1991 it was renamed to its colonial name. The name Bogotá comes from the Bacada people, a Chibcha tribe. It was the capital of the short-lived Gran Colombia at the time of independence, and has remained the capital since Colombia separated in 1830.
