Babrak Kārmal (1929-96) was elected to the lower house and entered the political arena. Student activism at Kabul University and other high schools intensified. Labor unions were organized and strikes began to take place. The newspapers Khalq (People) by Nūr Muḥammad Taraki (1918?-79) and Parcham (Banner) by Karmal and others were launched, and political activities began.
