1894‐1981 American child psychiatrist. Born in the small town of Kollekoff in Austria, he studied at the University of Berlin. After graduating, he engaged in cardiac research, but in 1924 he moved to the United States, where he worked as an internist before continuing his studies in psychiatry as a fellow at the Henry Phillips Research Institute. He then studied under A. Meyer at Johns Hopkins University, where his abilities were so highly regarded that in 1930, when his three-year fellowship expired, he opened and headed the first child psychiatry department in America at the university's children's hospital (Harriet Lane Home).
