A leading French publisher of encyclopedias and dictionaries. Its predecessor was the Larousse-Boyer Bookshop, which Pierre-Athanase Larousse (1817-75) opened with his friend Pierre Augustin Boyer (1821-96) in 1852. In 1856, it published its first small encyclopedia, which later became Petit Larousse (started in 1905 under the supervision of Larousse's nephew, Claude Ogé). Larousse's name became world famous with the publication of the Grand dictionnaire universel du XIX e siècle (Encyclopedia of the 19th Century), a total of 15 volumes (1866-1876, with two supplementary volumes in 1878 and 1888), which was launched under Pierre's motto of "popularizing without lowering the standard." However, in June 1984, due to financial difficulties, the company was absorbed into the information company CEP. In addition to the Grand Larousse Encyclopedia and the Encyclopedia of the 20th Century, Larousse's representative publications include language dictionaries such as the Grande French Dictionary and Lexis. Many periodicals and specialized dictionaries by field have also been published that have derived from the encyclopedia compilation, and since the 1990s, many electronic encyclopedias and dictionaries have been published.
