Outskirts of town - Basuemachi

Japanese:
Outskirts of town - Basuemachi
This refers to the urban areas that expanded irregularly and disorderly around castle towns in the early Edo period, when they were built based on a planned urban plan. In contrast to the orderly samurai residences in the center and the town houses of townspeople who also served the feudal lord, outlying towns were often inhabited by lower-class people such as day laborers and botefuri (people who worked as street vendors). At the beginning of the Edo period, laborers for transportation and construction work gathered in the center of castle towns, and in the middle and later Edo period, town houses (town houses received as gifts) were built in samurai land and lower-class people sometimes settled there. However, outlying towns did not become common until the second half of the 17th century, when urban areas expanded and they were built on the outskirts.
