This idea is said to remain in various parts of Africa, such as the story of sprinkling blood on the entrance of a village as a protective spell (MH Kingsley, "Journey to West Africa"); the story of Christ's cross being a magical talisman that symbolized Jesus' blood; the example of sacrificing 50 virgins after an earthquake struck the Gold Coast in 1881, which they believed was the work of the evil god Sasabonsam, and repairing the collapsed walls of the royal palace with mud soaked in their blood; and the ritual called Kasendi, in which people who held hands made small cuts on their hands, solar plexus, and faces to draw blood, which they then mixed with beer and drank together to swear to be brothers (W.
