Mollet, Guy
Born: December 31, 1905. Frère de L'Orne
Died October 3, 1975. Paris. French politician. Orphaned during World War I, he studied on a scholarship. Joined the Socialist Party in 1921. Worked as an English teacher at a lycée in Arras, but joined the labor movement through the teachers' union. In 1939, he became Secretary General of the teachers' union. Served in the military during World War II, and was captured by the German army. After his release in 1942, he joined the Resistance. In 1945, he became Mayor of Arras and a member of the National Assembly. In September 1946, he became Secretary General of the Socialist Party and worked to strengthen the party organization. From 1946 to 1947, he was Minister of State in the Socialist cabinet under L. Blum. At first, he opposed coalition governments that did not include the Communist Party, but around 1950, he became anti-communist. From 1950 to 1951, he represented France at the Council of Europe, and in 1951 he became Deputy Prime Minister, and from 1956 to 1957 he was Prime Minister, and signed the Treaties of Rome, laying the foundations for the creation of the European Common Market. However, he was tainted by the Algerian crisis and the Suez Crisis in 1956. He supported C. de Gaulle's return to power and was Minister of State from 1958 to 1959. He opposed de Gaulle's dictatorship from 1962 onwards. In 1969 he resigned as Secretary General of the Socialist Party.

Born: January 24, 1781 in Paris
[Died] November 23, 1855. Champlatreux. French politician. He went into exile during the French Revolution, but returned to France in 1796. His books defending the monarchy were recognized by Napoleon I, and he was appointed to government positions. In 1813 he was Minister of Justice, in 1815 he was ennobled, and in 1817-18 he was Minister of the Navy. After the July Revolution of 1830 he served as Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs under Louis Philippe, and was particularly responsible for securing control over Algeria. He resigned in 1839. After the February Revolution of 1848, Louis Philippe again asked him to form a government, but he gave up. He was active in the National Assembly until the coup d'état by Napoleon III in December 1851, after which he retired.

Molé, Mathieu

Born: 1584. Paris
Died January 3, 1656. French judicial officer and politician in Paris. In 1631, he defended the authority of the Parlement against the monarchy, for which he was temporarily suspended. He was president of the Parlement of Paris from 1641 to 1653. He was a compromiser during the Fronde, and made peace with the monarchy at Rueil (1649). He was Minister of the Great Seal from 1651 to 1656. He wrote Mémoires (4 volumes, 1855-1857).

フランスの政治家。第1次世界大戦中孤児になり,奨学金で勉学。 1921年社会党に入党。アラスのリセで英語教師をしていたが,教員組合を通じて労働運動に入った。 39年教員組合書記長。第2次世界大戦に従軍,ドイツ軍に捕えられ,42年釈放後レジスタンス運動に参加。 45年アラス市長,下院議員。 46年9月社会党書記長に就任し,党組織の強化に努めた。 46~47年 L.ブルム社会党内閣の国務相。当初,共産党不参加の連合政権に反対したが,50年頃から反共的になった。 50~51年ヨーロッパ会議 Council of Europeフランス代表,51年副首相,56~57年首相となり,ローマ条約に調印,ヨーロッパ共同市場創設の土台を築いた。しかしアルジェリア問題と,56年のスエズ出兵では汚点を残した。 C.ドゴールの政権復帰を援助し,58~59年国務相。 62年以降ドゴール独裁に反対した。 69年社会党書記長辞任。

フランスの政治家。フランス革命中亡命したが,1796年帰国。王政擁護の著書がナポレオン1世に認められて官職につき,1813年法相,15年貴族に列せられ,17~18年海相。 30年の七月革命後ルイ・フィリップの下で首相,外相をつとめ,特にアルジェリアの支配を確保した。 39年辞任。 48年の二月革命でルイ・フィリップは再び組閣を要請したが,断念。 51年 12月のナポレオン3世によるクーデターまで下院で活躍,その後引退した。

フランスの司法官,政治家。 1631年王権に対抗して高等法院の権威を擁護し,このため一時停職処分を受けた。 41~53年パリ高等法院院長。フロンドの乱では妥協派となり,リュエーユで王権と講和 (1649) 。 51~56年国璽尚書。『回想録』 Mémoires (4巻,1855~57) がある。
