...When they appeared on stage as choruses in the third part of Aeschylus's Oresteia, the Eumenides, some female spectators reportedly fainted or miscarried. Their number was initially indeterminate, but was later limited to three sisters, Alecto, Megaira, and Tisiphone. The Romans called them the Furiae or Dirae.
