Squirting cucumber

Japanese: テッポウウリ（英語表記）squirting cucumber

It is a perennial climbing plant of the Cucurbitaceae family that grows wild from the Mediterranean region to the Caucasus region, but in Japan it is cultivated as an annual plant. The stem spreads out on all sides over the ground and is densely covered with coarse hairs. The leaves are alternate with long petioles, triangular-cordate shaped, with slightly wavy curls on the edges, and fleshy. They have no tendrils. There are male and female flowers, both of which are yellow and have five lobes in the corolla. The fruit is oblong, about 7 cm long, densely covered with coarse hairs on the surface, turns yellow when ripe, and when it leaves the stalk, it shoots out seeds forcefully from the hole where the stalk was removed, hence the name trumpet gourd.

地中海地方からカフカス地方付近に野生するウリ科のつる性多年草であるが，日本では一年草的に栽培される。茎は地表をはって四方に広がり，全体に粗い毛が密生している。葉は互生して長い葉柄があり，三角状心形で，縁は多少波状にちぢれ，多肉質である。巻きひげはない。花は雄花と雌花があり，共に黄色で花冠は5裂している。果実は長楕円形，長さ約7cm，表面には粗い毛が密生し，熟すと黄色くなり，柄から離れる時，柄のとれた穴から勢いよく種子を射出する性質があるところから，テッポウウリという名がついた。
