One of the most common secondary silver minerals. In Japan, it is found in the oxidation zones of hydrothermal vein-type gold and silver deposits, in quartz veins without assembling with sulfides, or in host rocks altered by silicification. When exposed to light, it changes color immediately, from dark gray to black. It is also interpreted as a primary mineral, which is thought to have precipitated by the decomposition of soluble silver complex salts mainly composed of silver. As it always coexists with quartz, there is also a theory that soluble silver compounds combine with chlorine in liquid or solid halide inclusions in quartz. The one from the Sado mine in Niigata Prefecture contains a small amount of bromine. It is the only bromine mineral in Japan. Its old English name is cerargyrite.
