Semiotics

[Development of Contemporary Cultural Semiotics]
The theoretical model of modern cultural semiotics, which seeks to elucidate human beings and culture as symbols, is structural linguistics. F. de Saussure of Switzerland, who is considered one of the founders of modern cultural semiotics along with Peirce, considered cultural phenomena such as rituals and manners as symbols, and opened the door to the world of semiotics (semiotics in English). Saussure positioned linguistics as a branch of semiotics, and considered the laws discovered by semiotics to be applied to linguistics, but R. Barthes, a structuralist in France after World War II, argued that semiotics itself should be positioned within linguistics.
