Carbazole - Carbazole (English spelling)

Carbazole - Carbazole (English spelling)

A nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound. Also called dibenzopyrrole. It is contained in coal tar obtained by carbonization of coal, and is separated and refined from anthracene oil obtained as a high-boiling fraction in the fractional distillation of coal tar. It is also contained in crude oil. It is a colorless sublimable crystal that is insoluble in water and poorly soluble in ethanol (ethyl alcohol) and ether. When nitrate ions or nitrite ions are added to a solution of this compound in concentrated sulfuric acid, it turns dark green, so it is used to detect these ions. In industry, it is used as a synthetic raw material for dyes and plastics.
