A legend about a German poet connected to the Wartburg Castle in Thuringia. It has been passed down in chronicles and hagiographies since the late Middle Ages, and is included in the Brothers Grimm's "German Legends." It is generally known through R. Wagner's music drama "Tannhäuser," but the original form of the legend comes from a medieval German polemic poem that is thought to have been written in the mid- to late 13th century by poets who worshipped Wolfram. The first part, in which Heinrich von Ofterdingen sings praises of Duke Leopold of Austria and is defeated against the poets (Wolfram, Walter von der Vogelweide, Reinmar von Zweter, Biterolf, and a secretary) who praised Landgrave Hermann von Thuringen, is called "In Praise of the Monarch." The second part, in which Wolfram solves Klingsor's religious riddles one after another and emerges victorious, is called "Riddles." The two works together are called the "Wartburg Song Contest," but this title was given for the convenience of research after the 19th century.
