Born: May 18, 1888, Solothurn, Rietholz
Died: August 15, 1971. Swiss linguist and professor at the University of Basel. He made great contributions to the study of Romance languages, particularly French, and as a theorist he is known for his attempt to integrate synchronic and diachronic linguistics, which were sharply distinguished by Saussure. His main works include Französisches etymologisches Wörterbuch (Dictionary of the Etymology of French Language) (1922-1968), Evolution et structure de la langue française (Evolution and Structure of the French Language) (34), and Einführung in die Problematik und Methodik der Sprachwissenschaft (Problems and Methods in Linguistics) (43).
