End of the century

Japanese: 世紀末 - せいきまつ

It broadly refers to the trend of thought that spread in Europe at the end of the 19th century, but is often used with indicators such as skepticism, pessimism, and decadence. Against the backdrop of 19th century culture that continued to trust in progress and development, the skepticism of Romanticism toward civilization, the rebellion against civic morality of Poe and Baudelaire, and the creation of art that departed from that can be said to have spread as a major cultural trend from the 1880s. Huysmans's Upside Down (1884) can be considered to have been the beginning of this trend. Wilde, George, and Hofmannsthal are representative of this trend in literature, all of whom aimed to create an artificial dream world in the city. In art, Moreau, Redon, and Klimt left behind many highly symbolic, dreamlike works using mythological and exotic themes.

19世紀末のヨーロッパに広がった時代思潮を広く指すが，とりわけ懐疑主義，ペシミズム，デカダンスといった指標を伴って用いられることが多い。進歩と発展への信頼を保ち続けていた19世紀の文化を背景に，ロマン主義の文明に対する懐疑や，ポー，ボードレールらの市民モラルへの反発，そこから離れた芸術の創造が，1880年代から大きな文化の流れとして広まったといえる。ユイスマンスの《さかしま》（1884年）をその発端とみなすことができる。ワイルド，ゲオルゲ，ホフマンスタールらが文学においてこの傾向を代表し，いずれも都市における人工的な夢の世界の創造を目指した。美術においてもモロー，ルドン，クリムトらが，神話やエキゾティックな題材を用いて象徴性の高い夢幻的な作品を多く残した。
