It broadly refers to the trend of thought that spread in Europe at the end of the 19th century, but is often used with indicators such as skepticism, pessimism, and decadence. Against the backdrop of 19th century culture that continued to trust in progress and development, the skepticism of Romanticism toward civilization, the rebellion against civic morality of Poe and Baudelaire, and the creation of art that departed from that can be said to have spread as a major cultural trend from the 1880s. Huysmans's Upside Down (1884) can be considered to have been the beginning of this trend. Wilde, George, and Hofmannsthal are representative of this trend in literature, all of whom aimed to create an artificial dream world in the city. In art, Moreau, Redon, and Klimt left behind many highly symbolic, dreamlike works using mythological and exotic themes. → Related topics Satanism | Singe | Dowson | Jun Tsuji | Decadence | Fitzgerald | Moulin Rouge Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
